OOC INFORMATION Name: Chicklet
Are you over 15? Yep

Current characters in the game: None
IC INFORMATIONNames: Nadeshiko Fujisaki, Nagihiko Fujisaki, Temari, Rythm.
Canon: There is both an anime and a manga. I use them both as the anime goes more into detail on personality, but the manga is FINISHED and easier to canon review (The manga is 12 issues long, and I own most of them, the anime is three seasons so far, and I believe on-going.) As I have to pick one to be the focus and the other the flavor, I pick the anime as the primary source.
Why should they be combined? They are, in essence, all the same person. In the core of the series, all children hold an egg in their hearts, the egg of their souls, their would be selves. For some rare children who have dreams that are STRONG ENOUGH of what or who they want to be, those eggs hatch and produce Shugo Charas (Guardian Characters) that are parts of the child's soul, and are the embodiment of who they want to be. For most kids, they never see their hearts' egg. For those that do, most have only one Chara. A rare few have two, and more than that is pretty close to main character territory. Nadeshiko has one Chara - Temari. Nagihiko has one chara - Rhythm. What very few people who aren't part of the Fujisaki family know is that the "twins" Nadeshiko and Nagihiko are the same child, Nagihiko forced to be a girl until he turned 12 or 13. So... basically, it is one character with 3 bodies, two of those bodies being invisible to most people.
IC INFORMATIONPREINCARNATIONAge: The canon alludes to them as adults (Sort of like the epilogue, in the manga), but I will be playing them at the age they are in canon for the bulk of the anime series, if that is alright. Which would be 13 years old.
Species: The "twins" are pure human, the Charas are Guardian Spirits.
Appearance: https://img1.ak.crunchyroll.com/i/spire2/1d9936e0a8f26f7fbbf1a03d8f61e7131252866718_full.jpgNadeshiko is very graceful and demure in how she stands and moves, seeming more to glide most of the time than walk. She tends to sway her hips slightly and often keeps her hands behind her back. She wears skirts and kimonos, and favors tall boots when in skirts and to be sock-footed when in kimonos. Her long purple hair is always up in a high ponytail with a ribbon that ends in decorations. She is usually smiling gently.
Nagihiko tends towards shorts and sneakers when given the preference. His long purple hair is always lose and down, and he's usually either looking shy and timid, or smirking and a bit full of himself. He tends to keep one hand on his hip, or to be carrying something. While there is also a grace to his motions, it is more like one expects from an athlete than someone delicate.

The only difference is color. Temari's is the pink one, where as Rhythm has blues. I mean, blue.
As Charas, hatched, Temari wears a lovely floral print kimono that almost always hides her hands and feet. Her purple hair is tied up with decorations that look just like the ones on Nadeshiko's hair ribbons. She is about as tall as a person's hand, and choses to float wherever she goes, so as to not mess up her kimono.
Rhythm wears his darker purple hair down under a baggy white cap. He always has headphones around his neck, and usually keeps his hands in his pockets. Even when floating he always looks a bit slouched. Blue pants and sneakers, a white shirt and a blue puff vest finish the look.
History: Jargon first, so the rest will be easier to understand.
Shugo Charas - Guardian Characters born only to some children. They are the personification of that child's dreams for the future, and seem to only hatch to those who need help reaching that dream (with a few exceptions like Kukai). They are a part of the child's soul, and fade when the child grows up and achieves their dream. They die if the child stops believing in them for too long, and fade if they are away from their child for too long. They can be killed. If they die, the child's dream dies too. They suddenly no longer have interest in what they wanted to be. IT IS VERY VERY RARE for a Chara who dies to come back. Charas can be kidnapped, they can be trapped in their own eggs. (They tend to rest in their eggs when tired.) They can also have an X put on them, making them Batsu-charas. (Below) or a ? put on them (Anime only) making them Nozu-charas (below).
Batsu-tama - some characters in the series have the ability to turn an egg that is still in a child's heart into a batsu-tama or an X-egg. They can then rip that egg out of the child, usually causing the child to pass out. As long as the egg has an X on it, the child loses interest in all hopes and dreams they might have ever had. Think of it as a sudden onset of SEVERE depression. They lack the will to do pretty much anything, nothing interests them, there is no joy. Batsu-tamas need to be purified in order to return to their child. Batsu-tama can fly around and tend to either congregate or attack indiscriminately. They are as fragile as chicken eggs, and if broken the child will eventually come up to a long term depression. They will live, but not well, and will never have hopes or dreams again. Batsu-tamas usually do not speak, or if they do, have very limited vocabularies and do not have discussions.
Batsu-chara - or X chara. They are what hatches from a Batsu-tama if it is not purified quickly enough, or almost at once if the dream is strong enough. They are more intelligent, and can often speak, usually about whatever was used to turn them. (So for the girl who didn't want to move to America, her Batsu-chara said things like "Do you like English? NO! I Hate ENGLISH! and it's attacks were all roman letters)The Batsu-charas are far more dangerous, but also tend to listen more if something gets their attention. There is one STRONG exception to how Batsu-charas work in the series, being X-Dia. I do not think Batsu-charas can be killed, I have not come across any situation where that has happened yet. Batsu-charas, once purified return to a purified egg, and to their child's heart. (Again, Dia is a massive exception to every rule ever.)
Nozu-tamas/Nozu-charas: Very confusing, and exist only in the anime, and can only be created by one character, Lulu. If you are at all familiar with Miraculous, they work a little like Akumas. Lulu takes the dream of a child almost strong enough to hatch a chara, and twists it, trapping the child itself in a Nozu-tama, then transforming the child into some odd dream like version of what they want to be, with matching powers and no sense of reason or self-control. (One kid wanted to be a florist, so became a flower creature and covered everything in flowers, for example)
http://shugochara.wikia.com/wiki/Mystery_Eggs <--- if you want to know more.
Embryo - legend says there is a mystical hearts' egg that is SO STRONG that whoever gets their hands on it will be granted one wish/their dream. The race to find the Embryo is behind much of the plot.
Humpty Lock and Humpty Key - The Humpty key was taken long ago by Ikuto. (Long ago is relative as most of the characters are in the 12-15 range). It mostly was just a decoration, without the Humpty Lock. The Humpty Lock was protected by the Guardians, and according to legend was to go to a chara-bearer with three Shugo Charas. That would be the main character, Amu-chan. When Amu wound up in possession of the Humpty Lock she gained the ability to Chara-Nari (Below.) and in time, through exposure to the Humpty Lock, the other Chara-bearers were able to Chara-Nari as well.
Chara-change - The Charas can take over their child for a short time, either with or without their permission. This is called Chara-change, and usually has some small visual clue that can be seen by anyone who can see the Charas. For example, when Ran takes over Amu, she becomes more confident and bold, cheerful and athletic. When Kiseki takes over Tedasi, he becomes a bit of a megalomaniac. It is always related to the who they want to be. The Charas claim this is only exposing the potential the kids have all along, but as we see, this is a lie, as there is no realistic way that on their own they have the potential to do some of the things the kids do when chara-changed. (Utau can sing eggs out of kids' hearts, Amu can all but fly, and Ikuto can manifest a huge shadow paw with like...15 foot reach.)
Chara-nari - this is a full magical girl/boy transformation. While in Chara-nari, the child has access to a fair amount of power and special magical themed weaponry. When Amu Chara-naris with Ran, for example, who is the cheerleader sort, she gets a pink frilly cheer leader outfit, extreme athletic abilities, and her "weapons" tend to be things like a twirling baton, pom poms, and inline skates. When she transforms with Miki who is an artistic tom boy, her outfit is blue and her weapon is a huge paintbrush, and so on.
Guardians - The group of children at Seiyo Elementary who are Chara Bearers. (I will not get into my fan theory/head canon about time travel being involved in how they were set up) Officially the school's chairman chose these children to work as the go between between the students and the faculty, to protect the students and look after their interests. Unofficially - since very few people know about the Charas - they are picked because they are Chara Bearers, and are there to protect the hearts' eggs of the children, and stop Easter from putting X on their eggs, or destroying them. They are named after cards. Early in the series, they are:
King's chair - Tadase
Queen's Char - Nadeshiko
Jack's chair - Kukai
Ace Chair - Yaya
Joker - Amu.
Then time gets a little weird between the anime and manga. Based on the anime, Nadeshiko leaves for a year to study abroad, and Kukai graduates. Rima becomes the Queen's chair, and briefly an exchange student named Kairi takes the Jack's chair, though he transfers out before Nagihiko transfers in, and Nagihiko becomes the Jack's Chair.
Easter - A corporation made up mostly of adults and a few teens/youths forced against their will to work for them, that can all - for some never explained reason - see the Charas. They are after the Embryo and are willing to destroy children's hearts to get it.
And now, the History.
As all children of the Fujisaki clan that are going to inherit the dance studio, Nagihiko was informed that until the age of 12 or so, he would have to dress, act, and live as a girl, so that he would learn how to move and dance as both genders, so he could, as an adult, teach both genders. So Nadeshiko was created. Nadeshiko's personality grew strong. And still she always fretted over if she was feminine enough. She dreamed strongly enough, wished strongly enough that a chara was born. Her wish was that she could be feminine and graceful, while still being strong enough to defend the people she loves. Of that wish, Temari was born. Temari helped her learn to be more who she wanted to be. She was friends with Tadase from early on, but eventually met Kukai and Yaya. She became the Queen's chair, and one of the most envied girls in school.
Then one day, a new girl, Amu, moved into the area and joined Seiyo. That caused the usual paperwork for the Guardians, and they looked into knowing all about her, as they did with all students, but never actually approached her.
(This is all given to us told, rather than shown, because it is before the series began, some is extrapolated/heavily implied.)
And then one day, the Guardians noticed that Amu was struggling with something in her bag, three something. Eggs! Tadase tried to talk to her, but got brushed off, so it was up to Nadeshiko to approach her. Nadeshiko delivered to her an invitation to the Royal Garden - the green house where the Guardians met - for tea, and so they could explain everything to her. Getting her to join did not go as smoothly as they might have hoped, but it was, to Nadeshiko at least, quite entertaining. She got to watch Amu confess her love to Tadase publicly, and then after being rejected, watched him catch her in a princess carry. She wound up luring Amu into hanging out after school by offering to teach her how to bake a tart for Tadase's birthday. She even bribed her with photos of Tadase. She arranged to meet Amu so that they could go give Tadase his gifts together, then called Tadase and told him that she was due to meet Amu, but was running late.. could he please go meet Amu and keep her company until she got there?
By the time Amu agreed to join the Guardians, Nadeshiko had a new favorite toy.
It seemed fortuitous, that Amu with her special abilities to chara-nari, and her ability to purify batsu-tamas and batsu-charas joined when she did, for at the same time Batsu-tamas started showing up more and more often. And worse, hatching!
They all grew closer as they fought the increasing tide of Batsu-charas, and learned that the mysterious Easter was behind the rise. Easter, who owned nearly half their town, and who was behind most of their favorite musical talents. Like Utau Hoshina. Utau used her song to draw eggs out of theaters full of children at a time, and Ikuto would crush the Batsu-tamas if he got to them before the Guardians did. Ikuto and Utau were siblings who used to be friends of Tadase's, back when they were all kids, and now they were foes. Oddly, Amu had more trouble with that than Tadase did. She kept drawing closer and closer to the two of them, especially Ikuto, much to Nadeshiko's frustration.
But the Guardians also got closer. They went on trips together, and worked and fought together. They discovered that one of the reasons so many Batsu-chara attacks were happening at their school was that new teacher Nokaido-sensei was actually working for Easter. They did a lot of fighting back and forth with him, and eventually learned that he had once been a chara-bearer. Or rather, an Egg-bearer. Before his egg could hatch, however, it was crushed, destroying his dream of being an inventor. They manage to heal his long broken egg and restore it to him. He then quit Easter and came back to the school as an actual teacher.
And then... the time has come. Nadeshiko has to get ready to leave her friends. While "Nadeshiko" prepared, Nagihiko snuck out, like we learned that he did occasionally when he was very young. But this time, Nagihiko met Amu-chan. And he seemed very cool, but also approachable and friendly. They talked, and Nagihiko felt confidant that he could be friends with Amu when he returned. That done, Nadeshiko and her mother went to the airport to fly to England.
(Putting this next section in italics, because it is all off screen, and a mix of what we are told and head canon.)
The following year was spent learning dance abroad, working on foreign languages... and trying to shed Nadeshiko just enough that Nagihiko could shine. The problem was, Nagihiko.... wasn't fully sure who he was. Who he wanted to be. When he had spent time with Amu, it had been a stolen moment, like when he would slip off to play basketball, growing up. He knew it was just a short time, and for that time... there was less pressure. Amu was important, would always be important, but being with her for part of an afternoon was not the same as figuring out who he was going to be the rest of his life.
And then something changed. Temari went back into her egg. That dream was done. But she didn't fade. She just refused to come out or act or communicate. Temari was part of Nadeshiko's soul, and the one secret both "twins" hid from their family. Temari was the one Nagihiko and Nadeshiko BOTH could speak to about the pressure from the family, and the time table that was chosen for the children. Even though Temari's going back to sleep came hand in hand with the appearance of a second egg... the heartbreak was real.
And that stunted something in Nagihiko and was a blow to his confidence. Nadeshiko had pretty much always been confident and charismatic. And before Temari went to sleep, Nagihiko had been that way with Amu. But losing Temari broke something in Nagihiko. And instead of growing into who he now wanted to be, he lost his way.
It is unclear in canon if the length of time he was gone from Japan was preordained and kept to, or if the trip was either made longer or shorter in face of his depression and sudden hesitancy. But after a time, (and again going with anime as the primary, because the length of time makes more sense, and the details are more complete - so one year) Nagihiko Fujisaki came back to Japan. The official story was that Nagihiko had been studying abroad all these years, and now Nadeshiko was taking her turn. Some few key school officials were informed, including the chairman, of the truth. The chairman, in turn, made the decision to inform exactly two of the students. Tadase and Kukai. Nagihiko apparently agreed, though it was off screen, so we do not know how easily that agreement was wrought.
Kukai had graduated, of course, but came back at the Chairman's request, and he and Tadase were stunned to learn that Nadeshiko had been a boy all along. This is where the confusion on Nagihiko's personality starts to become evident. Because there are strong moments there, for sure. Like when Tadase tries to influence him and well...

https://78.media.tumblr.com/a44d7c6711cbc6332adea536c047c692/tumblr_mr491wRips1r45133o3_500.gifHowever.... we also see him being very unsure. They make him the new Jack's chair, even though he keeps insisting that since his egg hasn't hatched, he doesn't belong there. And he's also kind of terrified to see Amu and Yaya again when he's so unsure.
Of course, it turns out that the one he should have been worried about was the new Queen's chair, Rima Mashiro. Rima is the child of two parents who really should have divorced years ago, both of whom are over protective of her, since she was kidnapped as a child. Rima has become... somewhat... twisted thanks to all of this, and the little girl who used to love making people laugh - her chara is a clown, and her transformation is the same - had become a big ball of glaring hate and disdain. Time with Amu had started to bring back who she used to be, so being introduced to Amu's best friend's brother made her super possessive and jealous. And again, Nagihiko wasn't sure how to handle this. He tries to befriend her, which... does not go well. Over and over again does not go well. And any time he tries to spend time with Amu, Rima either cuts in or tries to cut him down.
To make matters worse for Nagihiko... everyone else can now Chara-nari, and his egg isn't even hatched. He's completely powerless. He feels useless and unable to help his friends. And Utau, and Ikuto, and their handlers are now all supposedly good guys and friends, and he has to play nice as though he just met them. And it all is just... too much.
But he does start to learn some things. Like the fact that despite Tadase being the king, Nagihiko's place on the sidelines and his own innate skill make him VERY GOOD at directing the battle. Except, of course, that Rima refuses to listen to him. Which is when he learns a painful lesson about himself. He's the self sacrificing type. When Rima's refusal to listen puts her in the line of danger, he actually jumps between her and the attack, taking the blow meant for a girl who hates him, who is transformed and thus can take more damage.
That helps Nagihiko find out who he is. And makes him more determined than before to break through Rima's hatred of him.
(The following is in italics because this is as far as I know from the anime, which is my primary, and the rest is from the manga which I am using for supplemental, and from fan made stuff I accidentally saw while putting together his first app years ago. The anime is past this point, but as I've not seen past this point, I don't want to write it up based on second hand knowledge. I am in a constant state of rewatching the anime but at more than 120 episodes and still going....
If this were not an "At the end of their life" game, I would stop here and make this the canon point. As it is what it is, I am continuing with this disclaimer. Thank you.)
Nagihiko works on making friends with Rima, with Amu's help, but without much success, until Rima finds out his secret. She demands to "meet" Nadeshiko face to face. And in private he reluctantly pulls up his hair and discovers Nadeshiko is almost easier to be than Nagihiko. And with her confidence and charisma, Rima starts to reluctantly become friends with Nadeshiko, often making Nagihiko transform so she can talk to her. It is only after that, that Rima starts to make peace with Nagihiko. By the near to end of the manga, pretty much the only one who doesn't know Nagihiko is his own twin sister, is actually Amu. But the switching back and forth makes it easier for Nagihiko to figure out who he wants to be, and how he is different from her. And as his confidence in that grows, and his dream grows stronger, BOTH eggs hatch, and both Nagihiko and Nadeshiko are able to Chara-Nari.
After that the manga basically becomes some weird in the head hunt for Amu's missing Charas, and other than Amu and Tadase everyone else has only bit parts. It is presumed from what we see there, and what Amu learns about growing up, that they will all grow up, and become their who they want to be, and as they do, the Charas will fade away. But not as in the dream dying, which is what Charas fading away had meant the whole rest of the series, but as in becoming a part of the child's heart again physically, and sleeping within them, as they are no longer needed.
So presumably, Nagihiko grew into a fine adult and an excellent dance teacher, and possibly teaches female classes as Nadeshiko to put the female students at ease. Because, after all, Nagihiko's dream didn't awaken until he accepted that Nadeshiko and Nagihiko were separate people, but both were very much alive within him. Or her as the case may be.REINCARNATIONName: Nadeshiko/Nagihiko Fujisaki and their imaginary friends Temari and Rhythm
Age: 13
Appearance: They look the same. Hair dye because their name already makes them stand out, so why not?
History: The big change other than the whole magical/girl aspect is that their father, when he did his tour of the world at the age of 12 to become a boy again fell in love with England, and moved his whole family, and their dance studio there. The children were raised with British and Japanese traditions, and in the tradition of the Fujisaki household. In other words, the locals have known Nadeshiko for YEARS, but have JUST met Nagihiko. In this case, though, there wasn't a year transition, it was just a few months in Japan. Without the other Guardians, Nagihiko is very introverted and almost never leaves the house, except for school where he keeps his head down. He stares longingly at the basketball court often, but never quite gets up the nerve to play if anyone else is around.
The other change is that the charas were imaginary friends until the first echo, but both existed.
First Echo: Talk about imaginary friends at school. He hasn't seen Temari or Rhythm since Nadeshiko went away, since Japan. And when he heard older kids in school sneering at the thought that anyone their age might still have one, he fled. Hiding alone in a janitor's closet.... he wished. He dreamed. He'd give anything... just to see them again...
So what it would give them are their "imaginary" friends as charas, and the ability to see and hear charas. No power to Chara-nari, but partial power of chara-change. The chara-change would have the visual element where anyone who could see the charas would see the change in Nadeshiko's hair ribbon or see headphones appear around Nagihiko's neck, and the personality would change, but they wouldn't get any of the skills, and certainly would not get any physical items like Nadeshiko's naginata from this first echo.
PERSONALITYPre-Incarnation Personality: Nadeshiko - TROLL. Subtle sneaky troll, but troll. While it is never SAID outright, it is obvious from the canon, both by what she does, and by how Kukai treats Nagihiko when he counts up all the things Nadeshiko had done over the years. Some canon examples of her being a troll:
Knowing Amu has a deep crush on Tadase, arranging to meet Amu, then sending Tadase in her place when she knows Amu will be a nervous wreck.
Constantly CONSTANTLY at the beginning sneaking up on Amu just to scare her out of her skin.
Knowing how Tadase reacts to being called a prince, warning Amu not to in a way that was guaranteed to make her do so.
Nadeshiko's timing in showing up places so that Amu has to deal with Tadase alone. (construction site at the beginning, for one)
Bribing Amu with Tadase pictures knowing Amu won't take the bait but that she'll agonize over it and that Tadase will be HORRIBLY embarrassed if he ever found out.
When they all go on their ski trip, and Nadeshiko who is an AMAZING baker and cook does almost nothing towards making the dinner so she can watch them horribly flail about and fail until Su chara-changes with Amu and takes over.
And if you noticed two clear threads in that, you would be right. One is that nothing she does as a troll would EVER harm her friends - embarrass them yes, hurt them or REALLY anger them? NOPE - and the other is how often the targets are Amu and Tadase. Kukai and Yaya get some too, but Amu is her new favorite toy, knocking Tadase down to second place.
And that's a big thing about Nadeshiko's personality. Toys. Specifically that she (and this is a bit more into head canon, but again, I feel the evidence more than stands for itself on a second watch) sees her friends as toys. She is protective over them in that no one is allowed to break her toys but her, but she plays with them. There is a fine line between what she will and won't do, but she dances that line happily. And when a friend is really truly upset, she finds a way to make it right. Like inviting Amu for a sleepover even though she had a huge dance recital coming up. And staying away from doing ballet publicly, to leave that for Yaya. These are as subtle as her considering them toys. But why else would someone from a family famous across generations for being expert teachers in all forms of dance, who go so far as to make the kids cross-play for 12 YEARS not be doing ballet?
Clearly, she is studying ballet, but keeping that to herself, because ballet is Yaya's thingNadeshiko is poise and grace. She is gentle smiles and a voice that puts people at ease when she's not yanking their chain. She is the Queen's chair, and she acts the sort of Queen that people look up to and want to be, rather than the snob-queen some schools have. She is a dancer and a friend, always willing to sit with someone when they need to talk.
She's also a baker, and a cook. She makes the tea for the Garden most every day - in addition to constant dance practice, Guardian work, and her studies which also speaks to her being dedicated and good at time management. She openly admits that she loves making treats for everyone's tea and basks in the praise she gets for it. Yaya gives her a lot to bask in.
Did I mention protective, though? When Ikuto goes after Amu in the home-ec room, Nadeshiko chara-changes with Temari and basically goes berserk, swinging a naginata at the older boy with what seems like an actual intent to kill. (I will point out that the naginata is traditionally a woman's weapon and meant to embody grace, even though she was showing more fury than grace in that scene.)
For the most part, it seems like Nadeshiko sees herself as her own person, and Nagihiko as someone else, and Nagihiko most of the time feels the same, though Rima pushes the boundaries of that in uncomfortable ways. Even after he accepts Nadeshiko is part of him, he seems to keep them separate in his head. It's more like picking the right coat for a situation. When Nadeshiko is needed, Nadeshiko goes, when Nagihiko is needed, Nagihiko goes.
So while I would argue that Nadeshiko is a good actress, it's not because of Nagihiko, it is because of the subtle trolling. Nadeshiko is very reserved and we almost never see her true emotions unless she is chara-changed or there is a reason for it. Now there are exceptions and places this does break. Like her getting uncomfortable when Kukai punches his male friend and someone exclaims that is what a friendship between men look like, or when she clearly wants to join in on sports but just as clearly reminds herself it is not dignified or ladylike. But moments like that are rare. Nagihiko, conversely, wears his heart on his sleeve. He can act for a moment at a time here and there - like when he seemed about to accept Rima's hand up out of the hole and pulled her down instead in the episode where he was determined to make her laugh so she'd like him - but those are about as rare as Nadeshiko's loss of composure is. For the most part, when he's angry he's angry, when he's insecure it shows. He gets panicky and worried and quiet and shy. This is a big part of what makes me think that they see themselves as separate. Because Nagi IS so heart on his sleeve that you would think he'd be constantly afraid of discovery, but we see that rarely, and only at the beginning of his run as Jack. For the most part, he is wholly and completely himself, even if he isn't sure who that self is.
We see a lot of times when he clearly is thinking that Nadeshiko would know what to do, but not times when he slides into her mindset to figure it out.Besides dance, the two big things both Nadeshiko and Nagihiko share is a competitive spirit and a protective nature.
With Nadeshiko, she tries to hide her competitiveness most of the time. In the snow sculpture contest she is able to work as part of a team with her friends and accepts the loss with grace, because really, they made a weird mess of it. When it comes to sports, she generally stays on the sideline to cheer for her friends. But we do see a little of it with the snowboarding, and we see a LOT of it when they turn chores into a race. Nadeshiko is even willing to win by cheating - throwing a banana peel under Kukai's feet - so long as she wins.
Nagihiko mostly tries to play fair, but he can also be more openly competitive. When he chara-changes with Rhythm, he challenges people, and enjoys the sport of it.
https://fat.gfycat.com/DistinctPerfectGalapagosmockingbird.gifNagihiko, as is stated in the history section, is very... unsure of who he is for most of his time in the series. He's kind of the embodiment of the tropic journey of finding out who you are as a teenager. His personality swings sharply depending entirely on his confidence in a situation. When he realizes he knows what they need to do in battle, he stops being hampered by his lack of powers and calls out orders like it is right for him to be in charge. And when Rima fails to listen, there is no hesitation or self doubt in his protecting her.
It is my belief that his protecting her in situations like that is the major driving force in why pretty much any fan work about Nagihiko is about shipping him with Rima. But from what I can tell, she's the one he protects the most not because he cares more about her than the others, but because of her stubbornness she NEEDS protecting the most. She's also, if you look at Rima's actions before she makes friends with Amu, used to using her inherent cuteness to get guys at school to do things for her, and defend her. So that could also be part of why she utterly fails to listen. But that's supposition and head canon. Another place we see him shine through because his confidence is up is when he gets on stage to dance. Dancing is a thing he is sure of himself in, and he actually shojo sparkles when he dances on that stage. He has a huge smile, and is light on his feet, and it's the moment of "I guess he really IS related to/IS Nadeshiko" for most of the Guardians.
Personality wise, Nagihiko is a bit all over the place because he is still trying to find out who he is, and who he wants to be. He wants to be strong enough to protect people. He is good at sports, but again, often fails to find the confidence to play against others. Kukai is good for him with this, and is also good at irritating him enough to forget to be worried or scared. Also, it's kind of hard to think Kukai would ever start hating a friend, no matter what that friend did to him. And, well, Kukai trolled Nagihiko a LOT when he first found out that this was Nadeshiko. So their friendship brings out a side of Nagi we rarely see otherwise.
Nagihiko is something of a troll, but unlike Nadeshiko, there is nothing subtle about it, and he doesn't keep it to just his close friends. He trolls Rima, for example, by pulling her into the hole.
He also does not seem to see his friends as toys. Other than with Kukai, and maybe Tadase, he seems worried at first that they won't like him, and nervous around people. He genuinely treasures the friends that stick with him, and as making friends is harder for him, he values his friends and his friendships differently than Nadeshiko ever did. Not more, not less, just... differently.
Temari... Temari except when she is ticked off, is a girly girl. She won't roll around or play in the dirt with the other charas, because she doesn't want to muss her kimono. she almost never shows her hands or her feet, and often covers her mouth when smiling broadly or laughing. When she is ticked though, she is like Nadeshiko when she's angrily protecting her friends. Like when a mouse DARED to be in Nadeshiko's house when they had guests, making her look bad in front of the other Charas. She can also be a touch vindictive.
Rhythm is less of a known factor, I will admit. He is in the manga only briefly, and again what I know of him from the anime, as I rewatch the early stuff so often for Nadeshiko and early Nagi stuff that I almost never get to him there, is limited. But he is who Nagi wants to be, and I do know enough about who that is from the manga and fan works (gifs and music videos, not fan fiction) to make some educated guesses. Also the official art of him helps.
He's a tomboy boy. Slouchy clothes, break dancing, sports, and music all done in as casual a style as possible. Personality, speech, and clothes. He sometimes pushes Nagi a bit too hard which in turn uses up a lot of his own power.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WIKj8fZyarQ/hqdefault.jpg
He introduces himself with "Yo" to the Guardians and tries to get Nagihiko to try lots of different things. Like Dia, he doesn't come right out and tell Nagihiko EXACTLY what he dreamed him into being, he tries to make him find it for himself, sometimes making Nagi do things he knows to be not what Nagi wants, so the boy can learn that for himself.Any differences?: Growing up in England rather than Japan meant a different school structure. And growing up with different people meant that Nadeshiko never formed bonds as tightly with her friends in the AU as she did in OU. She joined student council for a time, but as there was no supernatural reason she had to stay, she left after her one term was up to focus on dance. And without student council to keep her social, she had superficial friendships, but no really deep connections. She went to school, and she was envied for her willingness to stand out. She took the fact that she wasn't English, and ran with it. Instead of trying to blend in, she went the other way. She grew her hair very very long and kept it dyed a pretty purple. She wore gold contacts to make herself look more exotic. She added a caplet to her uniform. She tried a few activities, like cheerleading, and baking club, but while she was good enough at them to make others envious, she didn't stay long because nothing held her interest. With cheerleading, yeah there were cheerleading competitions, but they were few and far between, more often she'd have to cheer for other people getting to compete, and that just wasn't fun. Though she did like the uniforms. She kept hers.
But mostly... she was the girl everyone in her school knew on sight, and knew of, but no one knew well. If she was out for a week, only the students in her class and teachers tended to notice, Everyone else just figured they had missed her or something.
Besides, she had Temari. And she had Rhythm. Lacking for real friends, the ones she made up for herself were more fun anyway. Sometimes she'd even write notes to her brother and wait for a response. For a few months she even did an exchange diary with Nagi.
With Nadeshiko having a lighter schedule, Nagihiko snuck out more often to play sports. He kept his hair hidden under a beanie hat like Rhythm's, held down with a ton of carefully hidden pins. He always wore baggy clothes and went the other way from the house as Nadeshiko's school. No one really knew him by name, and when he started seeing the same kids a few times in a row, he'd stop going out for a few weeks. He never talked about himself, and just focused on his game. Often he'd put on headphones when he walked, with no music, just so people would think he couldn't hear them and would leave him alone.
He didn't really care one way or the other about his 12th birthday, except that the Japan trip would be a chance to not have to take so much in the way of precaution. With no school, and no need to hide, he thought whenever he wasn't with his family or practicing dance he'd be free to go out and play with other kids. He was wrong.
When he got there, he was excited to meet cousins he had only seen pictures of. It was the first time in as long as he could remember that either he or Nadeshiko was excited about something other than dance. He even wrote her a long letter on the plane, and wished she could be there with him.
But his first day there he made the mistake of telling one of his cousins about his imaginary friends. He told his very real friends and the first time he went out to play with them, he got bullied and hurt. When his parents were outraged and demanded they tell what happened, Nagihiko told them everything, including WHY he had been bullied and shoved around. It was then and there declared that no son of the Fujisaki house, at his age should still have imaginary friends!
He was kept in the house for most of the trip and became more and more withdrawn. When they got back to England, they registered him for a school well away from Nadeshiko's, closer to where he used to play ball. But he didn't want to go out, and no amount of urging got him to make friends. He became more and more isolated.
Then one day, Nadeshiko snuck out. She went to a fish and chips place where a lot of the kids from her old school used to go to hang out. She wasn't there three minutes before she was swarmed. People who didn't notice if she was gone a week or two had noticed when she was gone longer, especially when the teacher made it clear she was transferring out, but didn't say why. She became gossip fodder. Which meant more people noticed her now than had before. Including some kids from other schools.
It was wonderful! These weren't friends but... it was easy, sitting there, sipping her tea, smiling as they told her the stories that had been going around about her. And she realized, at the heart, it wasn't about her. It was about gossip and getting to be the person on the inside and hearing themselves talk. It might have hurt, if they had been friends, but they weren't and so it was almost touching. Not that they cared, because the more they talked the more she realized that they didn't, but because she was included even as she was apart. She was in the middle of the group when the topic shifted, and even though they pretty much didn't talk to her, they talked near and around her.
Her mother came to find Nagihiko, and after hours of searching, both worried and furious, found her instead. And saw her smile, saw her with other kids, sipping her tea and being out willingly. Being social, willingly. She let her stay another ten minutes while she ordered food for them to bring back - which was shocking because it was neither Japanese food nor healthy - then they went back together, and her mother's arm was around her shoulders.
Two very long talk with their parents later, and a decision was reached. Both schools would be told that the student attending there was being mostly home schooled, but would still attend occasionally for subjects they did not feel they could adequately teach, and for socialization. Both Nadeshiko and Nagihiko had to pass any and all standardized tests for that school, regardless of if they took the subject there or not. And the family decided that on a trial basis, it would be as if they had twins for real. But there were concessions that each twin had to make. Nagi had to at least TRY to be more social, and Nadeshiko had to be able to keep up with the changes a girls' body should be going through, with cosmetics. And that if she was ever found out, that was the end of this. And both twins had to REALLY up their game at dancing. They both agreed to all terms. And so both kids got to go to school while Nagihiko tried to figure out who it was he wanted to be...
Abilities: - The ability to see and hear Charas: any child with one or more Charas can see and hear all charas.
- The Charas' ability to physically affect the world: (For people who cannot see or hear them, they can see and hear what they affect. If a Chara drops a statue, someone would just see the statue fall. They can be mistaken for ghosts that way)
- The Charas' ability to carry things that should be too awkward, as it is almost the size they are: Yoru with a balloon, Su with her Christmas ornament, as examples.
- The Charas' flavor text item generation: Randomly they will have items that make no real difference except as flavor text for the scene - Daichi randomly having a soccer ball so the Charas can play, Temari randomly having a small branch to wave around.
- Chara-change: This can vary from giving the child a personality trait from the dream that bore the Chara, to giving them an ability that goes with that trait. The trait always comes, the ability only sometimes. Also, on some occasions, chara-change also grants the child an item for the length of the change (Yaya's giant rattle, Nadeshiko's Naginata) A chara-change always changes something the child is wearing in a way that is only visible to those who have and can see Charas clearly. (Amu's barrettes change as do Nadeshiko, Tadase gets a crown and sometimes a cape, Nagihiko gets headphones, as examples.)
-Chara-Nari: Full on magical girl/magical boy transformation with abilities related to the transformation, but can change over time. Nadeshiko transforms with Temari to become Yamato-Maihime and Nagihiko transforms with Rhythm to become Beat Jumper. This generally requires the Humpty Lock, or at least previous exposure to it.
- Chara-Nari with someone else's chara: In theory possible, has never happened to Nadeshiko or Nagihiko. Those transformations, like the regular ones are unique to the combination of child and chara, but unlike a regular Char-Nari, the chara's will and personality are dominant.
ROLEPLAY SAMPLES
- 3rd person/action: Using the set in game for this one.
Nadeshiko:
Nadeshiko took a deep breath fixing the fall of her skirt in the mirror. Looking at Temari without looking at her was a trick she learned as a small child and never once lost. Despite being alone in her room, other than the Chara, she spoke softly.
"And you're sure you're real this time, and I'm not dreaming this whole Shugo Chara thing because I want it to be real?"
Temari floated gracefully over to the mantle, and pushed a "you participated!" cheer trophy that Nadeshiko wasn't overly fond of off the ledge. It hit the floor with a good solid THUNK.
"NADESHIKO?!" Her mother called from the other room.
"Sorry, mother!" she called back quickly, hiding her surprise and her joy as she picked up the trophy. "I knocked something down, I'll be more careful!" She picked up the small statuette. The fake gold was dented. She tried to be bothered by that and couldn't. She set it down on a table and looked to the mirror again so she could address Temari, her voice soft once more as she fixed her hair. "Any chance we could go downstairs and prove to them you're real?"
Temari settled on Nadeshiko's shoulder and shook her head. "You know as well as I do, adults can't see us."
She nodded a bit as she tightened the ponytail, as if she was doing it to ensure all her hair was in place. The day she couldn't put her hair in a perfect ponytail without a mirror was probably going to be the day she hung up her skirt. She hoped that day never came. She enjoyed being alive. So much more so than she had a few hours ago.
"Well, I guess today will be an adventure. I won the coin toss, so I get to go to the dance tonight." She gave a slight twirl. "How do I look?"
"Like if you knock me down you'll muss my kimono," Temari said with a hint of a huff. "You should wear a kimono, you look so pretty in them," she gave a small sigh.
"I'm saving those for later. Besides, it's enough that I'm back for now. And I think my date would fall over dead if I came down all done up that way." Of course, that could be amusing. She headed over to her closet and laced her hands behind her back as she examined her choices. She eyed her pretty sakura obi then shook her head. No, she stood out just exactly as much as she wanted to for now. She'd save that for when it mattered more. She was sure she'd need them in the future. Besides, English bathrooms did not take into account how many layers one wore in a proper kimono. Still, Temari was right, it would have been nice to see his eyes bug out if the first thing he heard when she came to the door was the thock of getas on the hard floors. So much harder to clean than tatami mats, but she did love the rhythmic sound of shoes on hardwood, and the way it changed when she changed rooms and walked on other kinds of surfaces. Her parents worried that she didn't take off her shoes in the house like a good little Japanese girl, but Nagihiko didn't either. If they wanted them to be good little Japanese kids, they should have stayed in Japan.
Not that she was complaining. From her brothers' letters, she was not exactly thrilled with her Japanese relatives, though the food there was supposedly tastier than fish and chips. She never would understand the point of fish and chips. It all tasted like so much oil. But then, that was why she started baking. So she could make foods she actually liked. And there she blended as many cultures as she could. "And give the English this," she said softly, "They know how to properly do tea."
Temari smiled at that. "Cookies later?"
"Day after tomorrow I'll bake some. Had to promise Nagi a turn all day tomorrow in exchange for getting to go to the dance."
"Alright. Do you want me to stay here with Rhythm?"
"No need. It's not like anyone can see you, and when my date gets bored and wanders off midway through the dance, it'll be nice to have company. You should both come."
"Really?" Rhythm asked, poking his head out of his egg.
"If we find someone who can see you kids, then that'll be different, you'll have to stay with Nagi, and Temari with me, but there's no reason since they can't that you have to be stuck in the house all day, just because Nagihiko is."
The small boyish Chara came fully out of his egg with a cheer and hugged her neck. The doorbell rang then, and she grabbed her wrap and put it over her arms. She couldn't do strapless dresses all that much longer, so she was going to wear them while they still fit.
Settling the wrap, she headed down the stairs, enjoying the music of her party shoes tapping the wood. And when she came into the foyer where her date was waiting with her parents, she got to see his eyes bug out of his head anyway. Somedays? Somedays it was worth all the time pretty required....

Nagihiko:
He took several deep breaths. He was in his school uniform. Unlike his sister, he didn't see the need to do much to it, though he did swap out his tie for a slightly different shade of blue. To his mind, his hair and being born with odd eyes was enough.
But he was going to do this. It was right after school, so he didn't have a hoodie or anything to hide into, and besides, it was too warm for that. He had even shoved his blazer in his bag already. And he hadn't even set foot on the court yet.
He could do this. He was going to do this. He was.... going to chicken out... He spun on his heel to leave and stopped dead. Rhythm was floating right in front of his face, little arms crossed. "Go or I'll make you go," he said simply.
Nagihiko paled ever so slightly. "You wouldn't," he whispered in a hiss, glancing around to make sure no one saw him. Then he stopped, took a deep breath and pulled out his phone. He put it to his ear. "You wouldn't," he said in a more normal voice.
The Chara just gave him a look. He would, and they both knew it. "I don't..." He closed his eyes and took another breath. "I'm not like them, what if they don't..." he trailed off, unable to finish.
"Don't what?" Rhythm asked, "Like you? They don't have to. You're not asking to be best buddies with them, you're asking to join their game, they're still looking for more players."
"You're pushy, you know that?"
The Chara grinned and gave him a thumbs up.
Nagihiko sighed and put away his phone, turning back. Another deep breath. He looked at the hoop. focused on the hoop. He did love basketball. He forced himself to walk towards them. As he opened his mouth to try and speak, one of the guys warming up missed his catch on the bounce, and the ball headed right for his face. He jumped back neatly and caught it between his two hands, dropping his bag. When he lowered the ball there was a grin on his face, and headphones that they couldn't see around his neck.
The confidence was half from Rhythm. But that catch? All his. And why only half the confidence came from the Chara. He propped the ball on one hip and draped his arm over it, his hand found his other hip. "Still looking for players?"

Nadeshiko:
[Nadeshiko stood in front of the camera, smiling a warm smile.] "Thank you for your interest in learning traditional fan dances from the Fujisaki school of dance. In this video, I shall demonstrate a few of the most basic steps for a woman's fan dance. These steps, when combined in different ways makeup most of what any dancer needs to know to perform a full fan dance."
[She slid her feet slightly into a different position, drawing her fans from her Obi.] "This is the first position. If you are doing it for the first time, you will know the stance is correct when you feel pressure between the biggest toe on your right foot, and the toes next to it. Your left leg should feel a slight burn after a moment. One of the challenges you will need to practice is holding this stance. For beginners, we suggest a minute at a time, but for those of you skilled or brave enough, you should be able to hold this stance for at least a half an hour. The position of your arms is also crucial, should they shake or waver, please compose yourself, and take the position and try again. After four months of practice, you should be able to hold this stance for an hour or more on command. Please," [she gave a bright smile, still in position,] "feel free to pause the video and try it now."

Nagihiko:
[He looked at the phone, and debated for the tenth time just hanging up. On the one hand, he knew Amu was upset and wanted to talk to her. On the other hand, he knew Rima was with Amu, and if he got Rima started, Amu might get more upset.]
[He hung up the phone and leaned his head back against the sofa. Things like this were so much easier for Nadeshiko, it made him jealous. These things were also easier for Yaya. And Kukai.]
[He sat up and smiled a bit. They weren't easier for Tadase, and he knew Tadase should be home by now. He grabbed the phone off the handset and called Tadase.]
[And got voice mail. He sighed and waited for the beep.]
"Tadase, it's... it's Nagihiko. I was just hoping for some advice, but I guess you're still out. Don't worry about it, I'll talk to you later."
[He hung up. Then he stared at the phone. He had to take the risk, he needed to know Amu was okay. And... and if it came down to it... he'd invite them both over.]
[The thought of shoving Rima in a closet and locking her in for a while so Amu could breathe was tempting enough to be amusing, even though he'd never do it. But he used the amusement to make the call.]
[And.... got voice mail. Was... Was that Ami-chan singing Utau's Butterfly song? So much for Amu's little sister having taste. Okay, the song was good, objectively, but the mental snark kept him on until the beep.]
"Hey, Amu. It's Nagihiko. I was just..." [just what? Think! Think!]
[OH!]
"Going through some pictures I found of Nadeshiko as a kid, and was wondering if you wanted to come over and see them some time." [He was genuinely smiling now. Amu would love seeing the pictures, and maybe they would take some of the edge off of Rima. He had no problem showing some embarrassingly horrible ones of his sister if it made Amu-chan smile. And thankfully, he knew right where his sister hid the worst of them.] "So give me a call back, okay?"
[And then, because he couldn't resist.] "Don't tell Rima." [He hung up, grinning from ear to ear. That would just about guarantee that Rima would come with. So he had some photos to hunt down and a bedroom to clean up, and quick.]
[Humming to himself, he got off the sofa and set about doing just that.]
